چکیده

[1] Seasonal variability in ocean bottom pressure pb is analyzed using GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) data products and an optimized model solution obtained by fitting most available ocean data in a leastsquares sense. The annual cycle in the spatial mean is a substantial part of the observed seasonal pb variability; net freshwater input and atmospheric pressure effects are both important. For the residual spatially-varying patterns, GRACE and model results agree well over the Southern Ocean where strongest variability at both annual and semiannual periods is present. Phase patterns tend to match well, although model amplitudes are generally weaker. Considerable uncertainty remains in both GRACE and model pb fields, judging from the spread among available estimates. Improving the pb estimates requires removal of data noise from aliasing and leakage of land hydrology signals, and further optimization of the ocean model, including possible use of GRACE data to constrain the solution. A comparison of in situ bottom pressure array measurements with GRACE estimates in the Kuroshio Extension

[1] Ocean bottom pressure estimates from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) have been validated by comparisons with an array of in situ bottom pressure measurements. The 600 km by 600 km array comprised 46 bottom pressure sensors that were part of the Kuroshio Extension System Study (KESS). Validations in other ocean regions have been limited by available data to pointwise bottom p...

Seasonal variations in sea level induced by continental water mass: First results from GRACE

[1] Variations in the Earth’s water cycle are commonly quantified by their effect on global mean sea‐level. However, the interaction between passive adjustment of the ocean to changes in gravitational attraction due to mass redistribution, the related deformation of the solid Earth and disturbances in the Earth’s rotation vector will yield a distribution that is more complicated than a uniform ...

Changes in total Ocean mass derived from GRACE, GPS, and Ocean Modelling with weekly Resolution

We derive changes in ocean bottom pressure and ocean mass by combining modelled ocean bottom pressure, weekly GRACE-derived models of gravity change, and large-scale deformation patterns sensed by a global network of GPS stations in a joint least-squares inversion. The weekly combination allows a consistent estimation of geocenter motion, loading mass harmonics up to degree 30, and a spatially ...

Validation of Oceanic Mass Changes derived from GRACE Gravimetry

The satellite mission GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) provides monthly solutions of the global gravity field of the Earth. Temporal variations in gravity reflect mass redistributions over the Earth. Those mass movements are caused by physical phenomena such as ice sheet dynamics, accumulation of hydrological masses over land, the dynamics in the solid Earth and the dynamics in t...

Observed changes in the Earth's dynamic oblateness from GRACE data and geophysical models.

A new methodology is proposed to estimate changes in the Earth's dynamic oblateness ([Formula: see text] or equivalently, [Formula: see text]) on a monthly basis. The algorithm uses monthly Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) gravity solutions, an ocean bottom pressure model and a glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) model. The resulting time series agree remarkably well with a soluti...
